Are they really as important as people say they are? Or can you get away without them? What is the difference.

I have found that the description tag isn't that important. But I like the keyword tag and the title tag for their uses.

They can come in handy for other uses. For example, I work for a web analytics company, and occasionally we will pull information using javascript from the meta tags to send off to the analytic tool (in addition to other page data)

Thanks for the heads up. Have you found them useful on any of your personal sites? What are the benefits?

Meta tags does not hurt you website in any way, it might even help people find your content from time to time.

That is pretty much what I have been told by everyone. So I think I will stick with using the Meta Tags on all my sites.  :D

The title and description tags are the most important in meta tags, and you need to make sure that your
targeted keyword is as near to the beginning of them as possible.

Also, you need to target only one keyword per page for the best results, otherwise you will confuse the
search engines when your page is crawled, and therefore receive a much lower position in them.

In my experience, meta tags are not important. Search engines like Google have schemes to look for user visible content for page rank results. So meta tags do not play any role at all, because meta tags contain content not visible to the users.

I think the role of meta tags are misunderstood by some webmasters that search engines have had to de-emphasize their importance. If we can come up with the decent strategies for them it will benefit our website.

I agree with this. It helps search engine find your site using keywords.
