I have heard that Youtube pays you if your videos get over a certain amount of hits. If so, why haven't more people been doing it?

They do pay you if your video gets significant hits. But it is not that much, unless your video becomes an over night sensation.

I have never tried to make videos to get hits. I think I might try it as an experiment to see how much I can make in a month.

Here they say you get 1/3 of a cent to 1 cent per view. So videos with over 1,000,000 views can make 3300$ at the minimum.

That is a very interesting figure. At the rate of 0.0033$ per view, with 50,000 views you would make 165$.

That is actually not too bad if you can just promote your videos easily. It would be a good idea for gaming/sports sites that all ready have the traffic.

The question is, will you earn more by driving the traffic to your own website instead? :)
(even youtube videos need promotion/backlinking to receive views)

Thats a good point Kenneth, 50,000 views should net you way more in affiliate sales.
