I have been wondering for some time if submitting a sitemap to Google really helps your site get indexed better? If so is there a program that can generate one for me?

Thats a very good question.
Honestly, I have not been using sitemaps that much, which is a huge mistake
Sitemaps will help Google know when your website receive new content and will make Google come to your website every time new content has been posted.
There is a huge amount of sitemaps plugins for Wordpress.
If your not using Wordpress, then this might help you: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

Yea it would be on Wordpress. I will have to look for those plugins. If it helps Google find content I'm sure I'm going to want it.

I have submitted sitemaps for all of my websites. I use a sitemap generator and then just submit to Google. The whole process takes about 10 minutes, if that.

I have never submitted a sitemap for any of my sites, maybe I should
I have just let the crawler find me.

You should always submit your sitemap to Google. They will index you way faster and people will find your site faster.

I submitted a map for my site and Google indexed way more pages faster than it would have had I not submitted it.
