This may seem like a silly question, but I am going to put it out there anyway:

Many local business owners, where I am from, prefer a .co.nz over a .com/.org/.net. Does this make a difference when you are trying to rank on google for example?

Well, it depends.

Two websites 100% identically (same SEO, same content):
- The .com version will rank higher for "global searches" over the country-level domain.
- The country-level domain will rank higher for local searches (same country as the "seacher").

Depends on how you're going to use the site.

To rank for Google, no it won't make a difference.

If you are wanting people to remember the site, .com is the leading extension.  Everyone recognizes .com   anything else and it will be harder to get people returning.

There is no difference, the only question you need to ask yourself, am i making this website for global or local market.

If you making a website for customers worldwide, then you want to have the .com . Simply because it comes to people mind usually first.

Now if you making it for your country, city ... etc and people used to have .co.nz and people familiar with it more. Well go for it.
