It's pretty easy actually.

Every page on the internet has "value" in the form of PR (pagerank). If a page link to another website, then some of the PR will be redirected/linked as well. What you want is to get as many links to your website as possible, HOWEVER ... do not buy 1000000 links, it's not natural for a website to receive that many links in such a short period of time, Google knows that and will punish your website.

Dofollow links are links which redirect/link some of the PR to the websites they link to.
Nofollow links do not link/redirect PR to the websites they link to.

Most websites uses dofollow.
Most blogs uses nofollow (comments that is).

What you want is to get as many links as possible, from websites with dofollow links.
Put your keyword in the anchor text of the links, that way your website will start to rank for your keywords, since Google (and other SE's) think your website is relevant to those keywords.

Because google only counts the do-follow links while giving the page rank.

I bet nofollow links still have a value though, maybe not PR wise, but still.
